Global Perspectives in Student Affairs 2017 – Mexico

Student Affairs professionals must be prepared to work with an increasingly culturally diverse student, staff, and faculty population; respond to students who study or travel abroad and the transitional challenges of returning from international experiences; work with a growing population of international undergraduate and graduate students, and respond to the increasing demands from the federal government and educational associations to internationalize higher education.

The international field experience course includes an overview of student affairs and higher education in a global context, an orientation to education abroad, program logistics and details of the course and the in-country field experience.

For the field experience in Mexico, a group of students and faculty traveled to 3 cities in Mexico (Mérida, Mexico City, and Monterrey) to visit higher education institutions. In preparation for the field experience, they studied Mexican culture and history; learned about intercultural communication, globalization, and social justice; and talked to students from Mexico who are currently studying at CSU. During the field experience, the students experienced a blend of educational and cultural opportunities, including visiting Chichén Itzá, going on a taco tour, meeting with members of the NASPA-Mexico Board, and touring the largest public university in Latin America, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
